mower battery

I bought a new battery at Menards for our JD Z-turn today, it has a 20 hp Briggs. The original only lasted 5 years, I'm kind of disappointed, my last JD battery lasted over 12 years. I bought a FVP 300 cca for about $34, the smaller one was only 215 cca. What do you folks use in something like that? The battery has a place for a vent tube, if I see any sign of corrosion around it I will put a tube on it.

I would recommend the 300 CCA for anything over 15 hp. You only get about 3 or 4 good spins on a 20 hp and above before a little battery goes down.

Five years is pretty good for a lawnmower battery. Three years is about the life of most. Sometimes if the customer just lets them sit over the winter, they need a new one every year.

I'd look for a small car battery. Only mower I have that I can't get a car battery into that lasts 10+ years has the battery under the seat, it gets the 300+ CCA lawn mower battery. The older Cub Cadets with 10 & 14 hp Kohler's get 12-15 years out of a car battery, and they ALL have lights, plus one has AM/FM/cassette deck radio plus runs 12V diaphragm pump on my big 15 gallon yard sprayer when needed. Not sure what size battery I'll be able to get under the seat of my now 7 year old Cub Cadet zero turn, looks like a motorcycle battery for a big sport touring motorcycle.
