318 won't start

Went to get my JD 318 our of winter storage today and wouldn't crank over. Battery tests OK. Not even a click on the starter. Also found a large mouse nest under the air breather so I'm guessing something has been chewed in half. When I turn the key the oil pressure light lights but the battery light on the dash doesn't. Can someone tell me how that light comes on and goes out when working properly as it should give me a clue where to start looking. I don't have a wiring diagram for the tractor. I had to put a new switch on it last year as one of the posts had rusted off. It was a cheap switch off of ebay. Any chance the switch is a problem again. These little tractors are hard to get hands into to work on so I'm hoping to minimize what has to come off for trouble shooting.

Depending upon your serial number range the diagrams I posted nine threads or so lower down on the page MAY be of help.

Check the yellow wire going to the key switch,it goes to the
starter solenoid and is famous about overheating at the spade
connector. And do not overlook the obvious, deck pto switch
off, neutral safety switch on the shifter.

Good morning: Just putting my nose in, does this tractor have a seat safety switch that also needs to be checked? My experience is with my 212.....

I got the tractor up to the shop and found the problem - wire fell off the safety switch for the shift lever. Turns out part of the connector on the wire was broke so it easily came off the spade. I guess such stuff can happen on a 30+ year old machine.

When I start troubleshooting a problem like that the first thing I do is make sure everything is disengaged, then I jumper the solenoid, that eliminates a lot of possibilities.
