1974-76 Case 220 - Does not move

This tractor was operating fine last year, engine starts and runs well. Near the end of the season, it was parked in its temporary home under the awning of my garage. Next time it was started up, it would not move forward or reverse.

Gear selector moves freely from high - neutral - low. However when moving the lever for forward / reverse, it makes a god awful screeching noise and the engine bogs out to the point of dying. All the oil levels seem to be good, not really sure where to go next with this aside from taking the gearbox apart.

Any help would be appreciated

I have somewhat limited knowledge about hydrostatic drives, because thank goodness I've never had a problem
with one, but I feel someone has to help you. Tractordata calls it hydraulic drive, not sure if that's
different than hydrostatic. It also says it has 2 ranges, could it be stuck in 2 ranges at once? That would
cause it to act this way. Is the brake stuck on, can you push the mower around if you release the
hydrostatic? good luck, let us know what you find!

There are no belt drives to squeal so that is out.

You have a hydraulic pump on the engine with valves and hoses to the hydraulic motor driving the transaxle.

Make sure the hydraulic tank has fluid in it and it does not look like a milkshake.

Be sure the band brake on the transaxle is not froze to the brake drum.

Download the parts manual....
Manual

On page 48 of that manual you will see a diagram of driveline.

I would look at the lovejoy style coupling item #6 at the output shaft of engine.
It may be that a keyway or key in either half of that coupling has been destroyed.I

But not until I checked the hyd. fluid condition and drum brake first.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out for reference.

Oddly enough the tractor fixed itself.

Doesn't make sense I know however, after being parked all winter I fired it up and it works just fine somehow. I've driven it around multiple times over several days at this point and the problem has not resurfaced.

A failed key or keyway will do that sometimes.
Enough bits and pieces jam up to allow the hp to be transmitted.
Then they give out and jamb up again.
Eventually failing 100% and no longer enough pieces to jamb up.

just an update....yes, Is definite difference in hydrostatic and hydraulic. Case moves by a hydraulic motor, attached to the rear end. which is powered by a pump mounted on rear of crankshaft(externally). 'Hydrostatic' powqer comes from engine and cannot power attached equipment. Case read end has hi & lo range, cannot get stuck in both. Lack of hydraulic oil could cause a noise..

There's several spools or "poppets" in the speed control valve including (if it's new enough) a "lock valve" that keeps the (silly) setup from running away on a downhill slope.

Something in the valve was probably stuck.
