Sloppy Steering - JD 345?

Seems like the steering is getting sloppy on my 345, it tends to wander when trying to mow. Is there anything on the tie rods that can get worn and make the steering loose? OR is it more likely the problem is somewhere in the shaft?

Thanks,

Tim

The 345's a have a pretty good "recirculating ball" steering gear, which hopefully doesn't have excessive play, but anything can happen.

You need to get down on your knees and have a look at the 4 tie rod ends while wiggling the steering wheel and see where the "lost motion" is.

Worn spindle or axle pivot bushings can add to the looseness, as well.

345's are power steering. How many hours does it have? The usual suspects are loose tie rod ends, loose ends on the steering cylinder, worn
axle pivot bushings; and I have seen many of these tractors with the steering arm loose on the spindle.

Thanks for correcting that, TK! for some reason I read "345" as "325".

It has around 1700 hrs on it. Bought it in 1996, one of the first ones made.
I will get under it this weekend and look for loose things. Not sure I would recognize if something was worn out.

Thanks
Tim

If the power steering cylinder attaches ad drives like the one on my 534X, it ends up driving a ball stud that is bolted to a horizontal flat metal steering member. Years of jerking the top of that stud has caused wear in the mounting and in mine, I doubt tightening that stud would be fruitless. The stud and the mount hole are probably worn too much. On mine, I think I will just have the stud tack welded. Leo

Tim. Jack up the front end and grab ahold of each front wheel. Wobble each one back and forth and up and down. That should tell you a lot.
