Engine replacement

I have a mid-80's John Deere 111 gear drive lawn mower. Has anyone done an engine replacement on these machines. If so what engine was used and were you satisfied with the outcome. If not satisfied what would you have done different. This is used for hauling tools around the yard and the occasional grandkiddos use it for their trips to the woods. Thank you Don

I replaced the Briggs 252707 11HP with a Briggs 12,5 HP commercial.
Block interfered with the steering gear as 12,5 had extra bolts to hold crank case half's together.

i have used smallenginewarehouse.com with good luck. also heard of jackssmallengine.
dont know for sure, maybe they can help.

I have a L110 hydro that came with a 17.5 Kohler single. I found a new, factory leftover from a lawn mower mfgr...decals removed, BS 18 hp Vtwin that dropped right in...bolt pattern is common on a 10 circle, shaft is the same dimension, threads, and slots, electrical hookup on the same side on ebay for $600 free shipping. Only thing I had to do was to get new carb controls as the single had the carb on the left side and the Vtwin had it up front....cables too short.

I liked it so much I bought a 20 hp and threw my single Kohler 20 hp Command in the trash for a Husqvarna mower.

A 11 with an L-heal Briggs? I tried it years a go. Would do it again. Mine had the gas tank on top of the engine. That had to be moved. The new Briggs wouldn't fit in the frame. Had to cut a notch on the right side. Could find a muffler that would work and I think the throttle cables had to be changed and if I remember right worked backwards.
