Case 444 1975

Here long story short. The tractor used to own by a family friend. He bought it brand new at the time. About ten years ago he gave it to my pa. Then five years later we got it rebuilt. Trouble we had at that time was it surging, the tractor is. I just finished building and putting a new oil reserve tank for the hydraulic on and a flow control valve. Now it maybe little bit worst. One I still got the under 32 temp oil in it, so I need to change that. But would that cause it to surge? Also the travel lever won't stay in a position. Could it be all those things or could it be like the relief valve? Or is it all of those things? Any help would be appreciated.

Does applying a little choke stop the surging?
No, oil or throttle won't cause surging. Carburetor may be running lean, applying choke may confirm it.

Surge is usually a dirty carb. Remove and clean every passage well. Travel lever is most likely the neutral switch under the lever. It is a plastic piece with notches and wires for the start function. Also there is, or should be, a spring on the bottom of the travel lever rod. It keeps the little arm engaged with those notches. Plastic wears, springs break or get lost.

You should check the forward/reverse lever linkage underneath the machine. These parts can wear and cause possible surging or jumpy engagement issues when moving lever.
If you can, find a pressure gauge for around 3000 psi to test.
I suggest obtaining service manuals before attempting any hydraulic diagnostics.
Go online and enter your tractor model information to find.

Engine surge or trans surge??? You need the correct oil (motor oil) in the hydraulic system to prevent trans surging...
