Gravely Professional G Series, 987 Series

This 4-wheel tractor is about 25 years old and has a Kholer Magnum 16HP twin. I bought it new and it is a tough one, has served me well. Problem is this: the directional pedal, positioned on the right, pushed forward makes the unit go forward. You can also lock it down in this position. If you heel the pedal back, the machine reverses. The neutral position is in the middle - all this makes sense and has worked well.
The machine will only turn over/start if the pedal is in neutral position. Lately I've had to fiddle with the pedal to get the circuit complete to engage the starter and it finally quit working altogether. There is a rocker-type piece that is activated by the pedal linkage which in turn activates a switch that only closes when the pedal is in neutral. I thought I found my problem, and to be sure, I by-passed the switch - but still no engagement. Battery is strong, no other apparent problems. I'm challenged when it comes to these electrics; what might I be missing?

Thanks

Does it have any other safety interlocks? Like a PTO or seat interlock switch? Also, check for a broken wire with a continuity tester

I've got a somewhat older Gravely Professional G with a hand control for forward/reverse. The PTO clutch went out several years ago, so I haven't fooled with it recently. The only issues with starting I remember were with the position of the forward/reverse lever and leaving the PTO lever engaged while trying to start.

Section 11 of the operator's manual has a troubleshooting guide and electrical diagrams. It also mentions loose battery cables, bad relay, and bad time delay module

I undid that seat lockout 25 years ago...but you guys came up with something that didn't occur to me. I was doing some other work on the thing and maybe I kicked in the PTO lever inadvertently. I'll check that out in the morning (too cold down there right now). Hope it's as simple as that.

I have very vague recollections of needing to adjust the position of the interlock switches after adjusting the forward/reverse and/or PTO linkage (adjustments needed periodically as the clutch material wears down.) It's been several years since I worked on it. It's stored at my rural property, so I can't walk out and refresh my memory.

My older 4 wheel Gravely does that to me. Those safety interlock switches on mine are secured in place with a nut on a threaded tube. Mine sometimes need to be adjusted to compensate for wear or simply vibrate loose.
X 2 on checking the PTO switch.
