Kohler Command Engine

Can anyone out there recommend a suitable replacement engine for a Kohler Command CH16S? Spec. # 45509.
This engine came on a Cub Cadet 2166. Not having much luck finding this particular engine. I was informed today by a reputable small engine shop that this particular engine was discontinued by Kohler in 2010, and they never really had a direct replacement for it?

One site suggests a Briggs Vanguard

Note their comment that you will have to drill new mounting holes.

Another site offers no suggestions, but warns that you will need an engine with a 15 amp alternator to power the fuel pump and electric clutch.

That is about the size of it.

I am thinking your Cub Cadet is one of the drive shaft models. I am almost certain there was a Cub Cadet model with the Kohler V-twin on it that would fit into your chassis. (Same basic chassis, just a larger engine and probably a wider deck.)

What I would suggest to do is look for a similar model CC mower that was factory equipped with the Kohler v-twin and get the engine numbers as well as the chassis model numbers. (It will probably be larger than 16 hp.)

Since Kohler is still making the v twin Command engine, I think you can find a new one of those engines. I also think you can find a muffler that will work with the Kohler twin and mount in your chassis without a lot of modification. (Either new or a used one from Ebay.) The new Command twin engines have a pulse type fuel pump so there would be little or no additional wiring.

A lot of mowers built in the last 20 years, saying that because I have a JD L110 about that old from which I removed the OEM 17.5 hp single cylinder Kohler engine and replaced it with a new (10ish or so years ago) 18 hp V twin BS Intek I bought off ebay....a factory left over from a production run. The only thing that required changing was the control cable since the single is on the left side and V twins have it in the front. Everything else is in the right place for a drop in replacement. Got at least 700 hrs on the new engine now.

Well it has to be. A chassis comes rolling down the assy line and is it a L110 or a L120, difference is the engine being a single or V twin and such as that.

Thanks for all the support! I guess Im gonna try to find a used Briggs engine to fit on it. Boy these engines are pricey

I personally wouldn't buy a used small engine. Too many unknowns and too many potential users that do not know how to run or maintain a small engine, and the always present, sale due to an existing that the current owner wants to just get rid of...tired of fooling with it.
