JD LA145 fuel pump question

Bought a clean 2009 JD LA145 w/22hp B&S from origional owner who sold it because it took so long to start and he was tired of paying dealer to replace starters. After replacing broken starter drive, sure nuff it didn't fire til it got a squirt of carb cleaner. I've gone over it can't find the reason why it loses prime after sitting couple days. Replaced fuel pump and didn't help. Drilled a hole in filter cover so I can insert carb cleaner straw rather than remove cover. After sitting,1 burst of cleaner and it fire's every time then die's. Secound burst and it fire's up ,run's and starts fine rest of day. I want to give it to a friend and for safty reasons don't want him messing with spray. Any ideas on why it might act this way? I have an outboard squeeze bulb primer and wonder if pushing gas through pump to carb might solve it or damage pump diaphram? How bout replacing origional pump with an electric pump? Any suggestions?

Yes,I was able to see choke before driiling the hole in cover and the choke plate closes all the
way.

I wonder if something could be wrong with the crankcase breather, a jammed or broken reed valve, for example, or clogged mesh which would affect the crankcase pressure and vacuum pulses that operate the fuel pump?

(The reed valve is the darker circle at the lower right of the photo, inside the non-serviceable unit.)

Problem with pulse seem's viable but wouldn't that effect how engine ran after starting? If fuel was able to drain leaving carb dry,a weak pulse wouldn't refill carb without a lot of cranking. Talking about this has me thinking of adding a fuel shutoff in case fuel is leaking back into line from carb. I add shutoffs any time fuel can gravity feed past weak float needle to flood crankcase. This tank is slightly lower than carb so I haven't worried about it.
Maybe kill two birds with the outboard primer bulb. It has a backflow valve plus I could answer the question of whether forcing fuel through fuel pump will damage diaphram.

Let us know how this turns out, our Husqvarna with a Kawasaki is similar, it always starts, but if it's been sitting awhile it has to crank a little. I've been thinking about installing an electric fuel pump, but a squeeze bulb would be a good way to troubleshoot the problem.

well, blowing through the fuel pump from inlet to outlet is how I make sure there is no trash inside. It doesn't seem to hurt them as long as they don't have some other problems.

One thing: If your Deere has the pickup tube in the top of the tank, make sure the tube that goes down to the bottom of the tank is tight on the nipple. It would not be a bad idea to replace the hose from the tank to the fuel pump as well.

Update. I tested the squeeze bulb to confirm it has backflow prevention and it does. I discarded manual fuel shutoff, moved clear inline filter closer to carb and installed the bulb. I've only been able to test once after sitting overnight but it started much quicker. Not quick as I would like but much quicker than before so I'm pleased. It's good that I'm giving it away because I would likly keep on trying to figure out what was wrong. Thank you all for your input.
