Tiller Oil Seal Replacement - How?

One of the oils seals on my Troy-Bilt tiller is leaking badly. Its on the tine shaft, not the drive wheel axle. I got the tine shield off, and I have no idea how to take anything else apart to replace the seal. I am guessing I need to get under the cover of the gear box and remove the shaft? Or does the seal somehow press fit from the outside if I take off all the tines? Never done any seal replacements before.
Its a Super Bronco if that helps. I do have the seal and the gearbox gasket on order.

Thanks,
Tim

I think it depends on which tiller it is.

I am pretty sure you can pull and replace the tine shaft seal on a 'pony' model with the shaft in place. Get the tines off and hook the seal and pull it off. (Of course you clean the shaft pretty well at least before you slide the new seal in place. And drive the new seal in with a piece of pipe that is pretty near the outside diameter of the seal.

It may be different on a 'horse' model.

On either model, if you have much play at all in the bearings, a new seal won't last and you will have to completely take it apart anyway.

Got it out today by drilling a couple holes and driving a sharp awl in each and prying the seal out. Had a bunch of fine grass wound inside the seat. Waiting on the seal to arrive. I did find a nice chunk of schedule 40 pvc that just slides over the shaft, so that will work to seat the seal.
Thanks for the help!
