Old 1989 Briggs Engine

I have an old Briggs engine on a push mower . Its approximately a 1989 model ! Its old enough that it doesnt have a primer button but a choke instead ! Old enough to have the little cover on the side of carb with the one bolt that the metal rod from the diagram to choke and the gas adjustment screw on carb that you have to get to thru the little hole on the back bracket ! It even has a throttle cable . Ive cleaned the carb and replaced the diagram along with a new air filter , spark plug and had it running good ! Now it just wants to start and run a few seconds and die ! My question is - how many turns should the gas screw be back out of carb or set on ?

Thanks ,
Whizkid

1-1/2 turns open from closed. From there, fine tune it until the engine runs smooth.

You can find the age of the motor using the CODE number on the shroud. first 2 digits are the year, the next 2 are the month, and the next 2 are the day. the rest are just ID numbers. Thats the date of manufacture off the assembly line for the engine.

You might want to remove the tank from carb body & check the flatness of tank top with a good straight edge, the top of these aluminum tanks were prone to warping and allowed pump diaphram to suck air causeing fuel mixture to go lean and many other headachs, this problem was covered in older briggs service manuals, don't know if it still is,yrs ago only way around warped tank top was buy a new tank, when people started squaking about the $40-$50 a pop for a new tank briggs came out with a repair kit for less than $2(repair kit#391413)you might want to check on ebay or with briggs to see if still avail. and if pn still the same. While on ebay check and see if you can locate a
briggs PAPER service manual pn270962 with a print date of 1979 or before warped tank top repair/fix is covered in these manuals

Good engines.
Funny how much work a 3-1/2 hp rated engine from back then would do compared to a 6-1/2 hp now a days.
Notice how many 10hp riders had 32-36 decks back then? 12hp would run a 48 just fine. Now a days it seems you gotta have at least 18hp to run a 42 deck. Either the old engines were under rated or the newer stuff is over rated
