Kawasaki 23 HP engine

I have a zero turn Cub commercial TANK with a Kawasaki 23 HP motor. Use it about once a week on a rental yard--maybe 1.5 acre. Just started loosing power. Replaced both spark plugs and fuel filter. Ran perfect for a couple times. Yesterday it started up but took a while to get up to full RPMs and was a little low on power and finally seemed to run good again. On idle at shutdown I could hear a little like a small backfire--not really sure what I heard...but sounded like that....What do you folks think is going on here???? len in michigan
 
How many hours on it? Has it been serviced regularly?

I would check the fuel for water. I would look in the carburetor and see if there is any trash in there. How is the fuel delivery from the tank.

If the fuel pickup tube goes into the top of the fuel tank, you might want to pull it out and make sure the pickup tube is tight on the fitting where it goes in the tank.

I recall one Cub Cadet of some model or other that the fuel shutoff was in the top of the tank and it was loose enough to close while the customer was mowing.

If you kill the spark on first one side, then the other, does it loose the same rpms?

I wondered about it maybe being a valve issue--BUT I know nothing about adjusting them.....can you share any info. thank you
 
T R K Thank you. It has about 450 hours. never sets outside. Very careful with fuel. Change oil regularly. Just replaced the plugs and replaced fuel filter. Checked to see if good flow from the fuel pump and it was strong..On killing the spark--do you mean pulling one plug wire off at a time??? thank you..
 
When I checked ours I googled it and found some excellent information, maybe a video, I don't remember. Many small engines have an automatic decompression feature that requires the valves to be checked in a specific crankshaft location. Good luck, and let us know what you find.
