PTO problem on a JD 318

For a number of years now to engage the electric pto on my 318 I have had to put the transmission quick into reverse to get it to turn on (its hydrostatic) . Years ago I replaced the switch and didn't help. Problem seems to be getting worse and now if the mower has run for a while its almost impossible to get turned on again if stopped. Can't believe its a safety switch problem as everything works correctly once it gets going. Has anybody experienced this kind of problem and know what is causing it?

There is an air gap adjustment on that clutch, the only safety switch I can think of on a 318 is the neutral switch on the gear shifter, the seat switch. I am shooting from the hip but maybe a relay is failing because of heat soak after running.
might look around here

(quoted from post at 21:01:18 07/22/21) As mentioned, the air gap adjustment is likely the issue. Easy to do. And free!

("322" illustrated, "318" similar)

Also, low charging voltage or voltage drop in the wiring involved can cause clutch engagement problems, as well as safety switch or "time delay module" problems.

I finally got around to checking the air gap on the PTO yesterday. Measured .035 before adjustment. I've owned the tractor since 1989 and have never adjusted it so I guess it was time. Mower works great now. Thanks to everyone for the advice.
