My Case 222 garden tractor's transmission has started surging on climbing a hill. The oil level in the rear gear box is full and the hyd oil is at the right level as per the dipstick in the tube beside the battery. Am I missing something?

Surging is usually caused by the pump not getting an uninterrupted oil supply. Kinked hose (if someone has tried a non-factory hose, tank to pump), low oil level would be my first guess.

I don't think I've ever personally seen one with a dipstick. I know that made them, but most didn't have it. The oil should be about 5 below the top of the filler.

The oil in the rear gearbox is not what you need to be looking at. The hydraulic oil that runs the motor would be found in the tank above the front radiator.

I've had several Case. currently using a 222 & 444. Never saw a dipstick in the Hydro-oil tank. This oil drives the tractor, it will surge if low. Its supposed to be a couple inches below the cap opening.
