Starter for Cub 1450

I bought a starter for my cub 1450 as the old one was having so much trouble even turning the engine over.

The black plastic end on the end of the bendix prevents the starter gear from engaging the ring gear. DO you just pull this off to make the starter work?

Since its probably not OEM I don't know.

If it was OEM, and the bendix gear matched what I had, I would try it. On the OEM Kohler starters, it just snaps on.

P.S. My experience with those starters is they like very very good grounds. Like for instance a dedicated negative battery cable all the way from the battery to the starter mount bolt.

Starting from the beginning, are you SURE the engine's
"ACR" (automatic compression release) is working properly?

Moving on, HOW have you determined "the black plastic end" is preventing the starter from engaging?

There's untold THOUSANDS of OEM and quality aftermarket Kohler starters that have an identical-looking plastic cover over the coarse threads on the internal part of the starter drive that work perfectly, day in and day out.

Of course, since it's from "The Land of Almost Right" anything is possible

Have you verified that the starter motor is rotating in the correct direction to spin the "inertial drive" out and engage the flywheel when the starter is activated?

Since this is a "permanent magnet starter" it will run backwards and not engage the drive with the flywheel ring gear if the battery polarity is backwards or it was assembled incorrectly.

The old one does not have the plastic - you can hear it strike the shroud preventing the starter from engaging the ring gear.
