Hi all. I have a 285 that floods itself after a short bit. The plugs are soaked in fuel. The float seems to be functioning correctly and set at the right height. The needle looks to be shutting off fuel correctly according to my regular test which is lightly blowing compressed air into the inlet and working the float open and closed. It seems to me the fuel pump is supplying too much fuel and overcoming the float. Is there a problem with these pumps or could something be clogged causing it to over pressure? Any other ideas? Thanks!
 
What is the oil level? Gas in the oil will cause that flooding problem as well as a failing carburetor or fuel pump.

have you checked the pulse hose from the crankcase to the fuel pump? A failing fuel pump diaphragm will allow fuel into the crankcase, causing the same problem.
(I am assuming this Kawasaki has a pulse type fuel pump.)

If none of the above, replace the float valve.

Thanks for the reply. The oil level was OK and the oil did not appear to have gas in it. I have a new carb kit coming. Hopefully that fixes it.
 
Also I would like to change the coolant in it. What is recommended? What I've read says to use John Deere coolant but I'm sure
there's something cheaper.
 
I put a new carb on it over the weekend and no difference. Looking in the carb while running the fuel seems to be squirting in
rather than spraying in, like it isn't atomizing well. I pinched the fuel hose off to see if it helps. No difference. It won't rev
up and it acts like it isn't getting any air. At this point I'm thinking low compression? Any other ideas?
