Trying to get a string trimmer running again

This is a Yardman that was given to me years ago. It has sat for a number of years not running. It has a Tecumser Products CO. engine on it LEV115 35016E. Took the carb off and cleaned it up. Pull cord will not retract so I have rigged up a way to spin it over with a 1/2 inch drill. Took a 1/4 inch bolt and ground the head down to fit a 3/8 drive socket. It hits once in a while but will not run. Has a good spark that will jump well over a 1/ inch gap. Carb linkage was a bit hard to figure out how to put it back on. Linkage fell off while taking the carb off. Guess I'll be messing with the carb some more.

Any ideas what might be the problem??

Those little motors have a spark arrester. It amounts to a very fine screen in the muffler. Pull the muffler, and check the screen. If it's plugged, it won't run.
 
I did get it to run but it wants to run either wide open or as idle and if at idle it dies. While working on it the wheel broke so got lucky I had a set of wheel that had been given to me that fit.

As for the muffler I had to pull it off to take the carb off and I sprayed it out with carb cleaner so it should be pretty good to go but did seem to turn red when it was running wide open. Probably going to pull the carb off again since it is leaking at the bolt that holds the float bowl on. My rig to start it broke so I have given up for the day
 
My wife gave me a Homelite trimmer in 1988 for father's day. Had to overhaul the carb. years ago but it's still going, used it today.
 
Well I got it to run if and only if I hold my thumb over teh air intake. Float bowl gaskets top and bottom need to be replaced
 
Squirting some carb cleaner or starting fluid into the intake can allow those small two cycle engines to run long enough to prime the fuel system.

Sometimes fuel lines harden and crack. When that happens air gets sucked into the carb along with fuel and the engine always runs way too lean.

Now-a-days whole carburetors are about the same cost as a rebuild kits and save a lot of labor time.
 
This is a 4 stroke walk behind type trimmer with a Tescumeh engine on it
 
I don't think that engine has a spark arrest muffler. The muffler turning red could be carb is too lean, valve leaking or the flywheel key is sheared.
 
Most likely carb running to lean since to keep it running I have to hold my thumb over the air intake
 
Our son just brought me a Toro with a Tecumseh that hasn't run well for some time, we ordered a kit from Amazon for $19. It includes a complete carburetor, air filter, fuel filter, and spark plug.
 
4 stroke or 2 stroke?? Hand held or walk behind?? The on I have is a walk behind and 4 stroke
 
This isn't a lawn mower it is a string trimmer. Probably at least 15 years old if not older.
