Intek 21 hp Briggs

I am working on a 21 HP B&S Intek engine. No spark to plug. I believe the magneto or coil has gone out. Magnets on flywheel seem to be fine. I have ordered a replacement but I wonder what makes them fail. I replaced one on this engine several years ago. I don't think I have ever had to replace one on other engines I have owned. Any possible causes?

How is it stored? Moisture can be one cause of failure. Keep in mind that the 'trigger' mechamism (electronic circuit) that actually makes the spark is also inside the housing. Overheating can cause them to fail too.

One other manufacturer reminds us occasionally to be certain the ignition modules get a good ground through their mounting points.

The ignition switch shorts the "kill" wire from the ignition module to ground to stop the engine.

If there is a continuous "draw" to ground on this lead, not enough to "kill" the spark, but some current flow nevertheless it can overheat internal components in the unit, leading to failure, at least on certain engines.

If the ignition switch all corroded and green around the terminals from moisture and electricity, or has damp dirt and debris inside that might possibly cause such a problem.

May well not apply to your specific engine and wiring, but still might be worth looking in to.

Pull the housing and look for chewed wires. Had that happen a couple of times on an old Yard Man with the 20HP Briggs twin. Mice seem to look for the place they can do the most damage. Daughter's snow blower was a casualty one year when they chewed through the plug wire on a 8hp Tecumseh.

I generally don't like using poisons but it's the only way I can keep them out of the barn, the boat, the old truck, gas grill, garage......
