B110 brief grinding noise

With the engine running and in neutral, when I engage the clutch there's a brief 2 second grinding noise. After the clutch is fully engaged, the noise disappears. When I change to other gears the same noise is there for the same amount of time. It's caused by engaging the clutch.

With the engine off and the drive belt off and the transaxle in neutral, the idler pulley and the transaxle pulley spin smooth, free and quiet. I pushed and pulled on the shaft for the bevel gear box and there is no play.

I haven't figured out exactly where the noise is coming from. There is the bevel gear box drive pulley as a possibility, but I haven't figured out a way to test it.

The tractor runs fine otherwise. I can motor around and mow, it's just that brief grinding noise when I engage the clutch ....

Someone else reported a similar problem many years ago but the thread never came to conclusion.

Any tips on how to diagnose the source ?

I have a short video of the problem. But I can't figure out how to post the you_tube link. The form keeps rejecting the URL.

After a little research I found that the bevel gear box drive pulley should have some plastic shims inside to prevent some inner parts from rubbing against each other causing a chatter effect. Better explained by Zippo here:

I disassembled the bevel gear box drive pulley and found the shims to be intact and in good condition,(not bad for a 50+ year old tractor). Unfortunately that is not the source of my noise.

So, the hunt continues.....

A B-110 is an Allis Chalmers Garden tractor:

Here is the video link. Remove the extra .'s to view.

(This is the only way I can add a URL and not have it rejected.)

Check the differential it should be on the RH axle /wheel hub some have a grease zerk for greasing

The noise occurs even if the tractor is not moving. Such as when the tractor is in neutral with the engine running.

Engaging/disengaging the drive belt results in generating the noise. So, I don't think it is the differential.

Interesting. Someone else also said they thought it was normal too.

The reason I worried is because I've owned this tractor for over 10 years and I know every little noise it makes. This is a new noise. Maybe I'll just have to monitor it for a while and see how it evolves.
