JD D 110 hydrostatic tranny

Dad has a Deere model D 110 42 riding
mower that the transmission seems to start
slipping and then quit pulling until it
cools back down after about 30 mins. I
have replaced the drive belt and all of
the pulleys are good on it. Doing a little
research online everyone is saying to
change the oil in it although it's
supposed to be a sealed unit, but what is
the recommended oil that is supposed to be
in it ? Some are saying 5w 50 engine oil
and some are using 20w 50 engine oil.
Don't know if this is even the correct oil
to use or not. Thanks.

5w50 full synthetic. It holds up to heat better than straight dino and will help with the slips when hot problem.

JD will spec their own oil, but if you go to the transaxle maker's site they almost all spec that oil for the same trans in other applications.

The manufacturer sells overhaul parts. An oil change might not fix your tractor but an overhaul will.
John Deere wants to sell you a new transaxle or new tractor.

I know him buying a new mower isn't going to happen but didn't figure I had much to loose by trying an oil change in it first. I bought it new originally and used it for 2 years until I upgraded to a zero turn then he got it, so I know it hasn't been changed before.

There is a video on U-tube by Taryl that shows an overhaul of one of those Tuff Torq transmissions. It might be worth a look even if you don't overhaul yours, as he shows where to drill the drain hole in the bottom of the case and tap the hole for a plug.

I am thinking the oil back when I was servicing those (there was a recall on the version used by Husqvarna where the 'limited slip' would slip when the brake was applied.) was 10w40, but If its slipping I would put 20w50 back in it.

Tuff Torq has a website where you can get transmissions and parts.
