Dead Snapper?

28" Snapper; 9 hp B&S engine.....was mowing in heavy rye grass a couple of days ago and the engine stopped dead with a slight rattle. Although I don't see any external damage, I assume that I have blown cylinder, rod or other internal part. The electric start seems to spin easily but there is no evidence of compression. Any guesses on what might have killed the engine and any remedy other than to rebuild it? Thanks for any input.

I had that to happen to an older lawn mower with a horizontal 11 hp B&S engine. When I pulled the crankcase cover the connecting rod was in very
small pieces. It looked like the rod had shattered.

The rod is nolonger connected to the crank. You could get lucky and not have any internal damage. If did damage the block. The crack or hole would be right
behind the starter. Dad was a Snapper dealer for years. Saw this many times. Take the pan off and peak inside.

Years back dad traded for a 28" rider that he sold new with the same problem. He took the pan off and found the rod broke just above the crank. No damage to the
crank or block. Dad put in a new rod and rings. Sold it a few days later. It ran another 10 years. Dad bought it a second time.

I gave the busted Snapper to a small engine repair shop that has done some fixes for me on equipment. The owner said that 28" Snapper was the best riding mower on the planet. He was gonna repair it and give it to a relative. I decided to get the second Snapper repaired (hard starting, wouldn't run) as a backup to the Cub Cadet XT1 that I bought. Will use the Snapper to pull my small dump trailer around the yard. By the way, I really like the XT1. Very tight turning radius and cuts well (42" cut).
