Gravely Repower

I am looking at buying a couple Gravely tractors from the 1950s. They are in pieces but between the 5 of them I think one might be made complete. I'm sure the engines
are beyond repair so is there an easy swap in engine?

The quick answer is NO. This isn't to say that a lot of conversions have been done over the years. There are several issues in converting an old Gravely to a modern engine. The first issue is that the Gravely T head engine ran at about 1800 rpm while most modern engines run at 3600. You would have to run to keep up with a Gravely L. The second issue is that an adapter plate is necessary to bolt a modern engine to a gravely transmission. The third issues is that the Gravely used a different crankshaft.

If you are not familiar with the the Gravely two wheel tractors, you need to know that that there were models L, LI, Ls, and L8. The model L had high speed gearing. The LI is intermediate speed. The LS slow speed. The L8 had four forward speeds and four reverse speeds. The ground speed of the L was too fast for much other than mowing.

Some years back there was a lot of interest in repowering the old Gravely tractors. A fellow named Bruce Guthrie made conversion kits, but I haven't heard anything about him for several years. I did find a Facebook group that still seems to be active.
