John Deere 300 16hp Charge pump leaking

My John Deere 300 with the 16hp Kohler engine just developed a leak at the charge pump, it may have been leaking before, but since I started blowing the snow I begin to see the fluid, and of course it is much more visible in the white stuff. When I looked on JDPARTS, I see there is a seal, could that be my only problem or could it be something more. Thanks for any feedback. Jack

Most likely it's just the seal. There's a needle bearing just inboard of the seal, if it's developed any play there likely the shaft would be worn, as well as the bearing. VERY unlikely, though.

Are you planning to yank the seal and simply replace it or remove the charge pump to repair it?

Seal # at DEERE is M45400 at nearly $25 and SKF 6825 is a good substitute, and likely cheaper through a local auto parts store or "bearings and drives"-type place.

Hi, In reply to your question, "I see there is a seal, could that be my only problem or could it be something more." Part A of the question, "I see there is a seal could that be my only problem?' Yes, that could be your only problem. Part B of the question, "could it be something more?" Here is where I am inclined to disagree somewhat with wore out's opinion. Yes, it absolutely could be something more and I would not consider "it being something more" to be unlikely at all on a 45 year old tractor.

tirekicker, dunno if you've been around and worked on a lot of these Sundstrand hydros?

The are a VERY robust unit and the odds really ARE in favor of it being a simple leak from a worn seal.

On the other hand, have you had bad experiences with them?

Thanks for both of your input. While it is just sitting and not running it does not leak, so I think that I will wait till we have just a little warmer weather so I don't have to spend as much to heat my old drafty shop. I'll put another post out there once I have the new seal in.
Thanks,
Jack ,
