patching inner tube for mini trailer

Good evening:
I have a 4.00 x 8 inner tube with a small hole, less than 1/4 inch long. I have a Camel brand patch kit, the patch material I wanted to use is about 3 x 3 inches, but it seems sort of petrified, crackly and stiff. The kit is not ancient, it has been on my garage shelf indoors for about a year. Will I do any harm if I try using a piece of this material? Any replies appreciated.

Who can say patch kit wasn't on retail store shelf 5 years before you bought it?
Patches are cheap, buy a new kit. Once a patch is stuck to tube it's difficult to
remove patch and residue so that a secound patch can be put on.

"Will I do any harm if I try using a piece of this material?"

Only to your pride and self esteem over wasting time trying to patch an $8 or $10 tube!

My guess is that you already know the answer to this one. You have nobody to blame if that old rotten piece of
rubber doesn't seal. You find this out the next morning when you walk to the garage and see this tire flat
again.

If the tube is bad because of a puncture then a patch is an appropriate fix. If it's old age then spring for a
new tube. Chances are the new tube is about the price of a new patch kit.

Good evening: This post has turned out to show how some folks (like me) fix or patch things like an obsession.

The tube is not worth the price of a patch kit. The old kit I had on the shelf, when I handled the 3 x 3 inch piece of patch material, it crumbled. I could have never gotten it stuck to the old tube in one piece!

A new tube has been bought and installed, I think I should be happy with that and toss the leftovers. Replies much appreciated.
