valve keepers, or retainer, on KT 17 engine

I have a 175 wheel horse tractor , with the 2cyl KT 17 engine. after using it for several years, it lost compression on one cylinder, and I found the valve keeper crumbled, and laying down in the spring chamber. This was almost 2 years ago. I ordered a new keeper set, and installed it. The old tractor ran good till this fall, when it happened again. I just reordered new keepers, and spring retainers. What may be the cause, which I must be overlooking? This is twice now!

No, I did not think of it! I guess that I would just have to buy one and try it. Can't think of a way to know if it is weak or not!

There is a special tool for compressing valve springs to check tension. I would have to look up what the specs are for that engine, but it's just as easy to replace the spring.

Have you ever adjusted the valve lash? That is the gap between the tappet and the valve. Excessive valve lash causes a hammering effect that eventually destroys parts.

No, I didn't try to adjust the valve lash, It never entered my mind, and I can see that it should have been done. (MY BAD!)
