Kohler engine bogging down

I have a Craftsman GT5000 garden tractor. 26 h.p. kohler command engine. The engine has a new carb.as of last week along with new plugs air
filter etc. Engine runs fine but bogs down when the mower pto is engaged. Mechanic readjusted the carb and checked all the needle valves.
Tested again today, still bogs down under load. Good compression on both cylinders. No apparent electrical problems with the pto or fuel
pump.Scratching my head on this one. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Leoinmi.

What are you powering off the pto? I would be sure whatever you are trying to run off the pto is all turning freely, no seized pulleys or bearings or if on a mower deck be sure something isn't wrapped around the blades.

t could be a lean condition. Is there anyplace it could be leaking vacuum?

The pto is the electrical engagement for the mower deck. Is it possible there might be an electrical draw or short when the pto is engaged that may affect the charging system of the engine ? This in turn may cause the plugs to not get good spark. The battery is good shape and the ignition is also working properly. Like I said, the engine runs fine when it is not under load, it only bogs down and begins to smoke a little when the mower deck is engaged. I still believe the problem lies in the carb. even if it is brand new. It may be defective to where the needle valve is not adjusted right from the manufacture. I will have to investigate further. Thanks for all the suggestions.

New blades on the mowing deck and the electrical pto assembly is about three years old. All the pulleys are good and spin freely. All the belts are good also, no cracks or fraying. Spark plugs and wires are new, so is the starter assembly. The tractor didi not have this problem until the new carb was put on it, so logic tells me the carb is defective.

Not sure if it is an OEM or a cheap knock off. Got the carb off the Sears parts site since the tractor is a Craftsman GT5000.

I have a JD X570 and that bogs down when initially engaging the PTO for either the mower deck or the snow blower attachment. I have found that bumping the choke a bit when engaging the PTO eliminates the bogging down. This becomes unnecessary when the unit has run for a while so I attribute this to a lean condition before fully warmed up.

Try partial choke when engaging the PTO. This would tell you if it's a fuel related issue or not. If it does indicate lean condition I would also suggest looking at the carb mounting gasket for a potential leak. Easy way to check is to spray carb cleaner or WD40 on the gasket while the motor is running and see if there's a change in engine speed.

Best of luck.

Thanks Bob. I will try that and check the gasket as well. I guess letting the engine warm up real good could help, Kholers are known to be cold blooded.

One more thing, the engine blows black smoke when it bogs down. I always thought that meant it is running too rich. So maybe the gasket is leaking like you suggested. Thanks again.

I'm going with bad condenser/need to clean point gap and reset. Buy a new condenser, clean the breaker contact points, and then reset the point gap to the timing. Make sure when you manually open the points you get a good blue snappy spark across your plug (pull it and ground the plug to see the snap)

LMK if I win (I'd say 60% chance this is it)

you do have a clean air filter correct it can cause both of your issues,i have seen some come in had to pry out in pieces but customer always said has new filter
