JD 318 p218g starter grinding noise

So i replaced my recently replaced starter because one of the starter mounts snapped off and obviously it rotated and would not work. I figured a manufacturing defect or improper install. I replaced with chinese db elec starter, was very careful on correct install and am very unhappy with starter. It sounds like grinding and marbles in there when starting. It will start but very scary. It seems that, and im guessing that im only getting the gear to come out halfway on the ring gear. I inspected every tooth on ring gear and they are fine but have shiny spots on the top of the gear where starter is engaging. I have read some shimming could be nessary but my onan manual doesnt mention it. Is the chinese starer garbage? Any advice appreciated, Thanks!!! B

I wish I could find a better replacement starter. Maybe a real rebuilt one. The Chinese tolerances are just so bad sometimes. Keep running and wait for the teeth to wear in or pull motor again? Thanks Billy

Go over to Smokstak. Someone over there should be able to help you. Go to the Onan section. Great bunch of guys always willing to help.Cost nothing for the help. Tell them I sent you.

P series Onans do not have any adjustment. B series have mount hole slotted, no shims.

Compare your old starter drive gear to the new one. Maybe a mismatch there that could be fixed with a drive swap, assuming your old one is ok. Or contact the seller and see if they can help. If you bought it off ebay(db elec) is a big ebay seller, a complaint will get you a refund.

I bought the tractor with a new starter this spring. One of the mounts snapped and I replaced it last week. I torqued to spec with locktight and was very careful with instal. I just pulled the plugs and winged it over to see if the gear would find its home in the ring gear but it looks like its riding on top of the teeth causing the grinding noise. Its coming out.

Good chance you have one like the 318 I bought. It had a new starter on it but would not engage right.
Turns out these engines the mounting pad for the starter cracks and then it does not hold it tight and hold
the correct angle as it tries to start. I could see this after I had the engine out and kicked the drive in
on the work bench. I was able to make a strap to fasten to the back of the starter and then go up higher to
an unused bolt hole to hold the starter in place and it worked well. You will get pretty fast at pulling the
engine in and out ! lol. After owning one and working on it I sure do not see why these are so beloved ?

Very interesting!! Thanks for that, Ill have a look!! I have been wrenching on these things a lot and Im wondering the same thing, lol!! Cheers! B

Mike M. I have a B48G Onan in my 982 Cub Cadet. And I absolutely..... HATE that engine. Tractor is great, but I got so every time I started that Onan it felt like a bomb ticking about ready to blow up.
The finger wheel on my engine that spins the balls used for governor weights must be really loose, after I mow a half hour the governor won't increase engine speed, the engine bogs down if the grass gets taller, bump throttle lever up and rpm instantly increases. It goes thru points and a condensor about every 50 hours now, and Cummins charges over $100 for them. The old single cylinder Kohlers are expensive to rebuild and tune-up but they hold up much better than this Onan. My NEW mower has a 27 hp Kawasaki, it should run just about forever!

Looks like starter is square. It bolts to cylinder. Depth of gear engagement is about 1/3 - 1/2 of what I would like. Pulling starter now.

so if I shim the starter on outer bolt with washer it brings starter closer, good tooth engagement, no catching , grinding. What do you guys think? Thanks B
