I'm trying to find out if the o-ring seals on the hydrostat control lever shaft can be replaced without tearing the unit all apart. The service manual doesn't really say. Has anyone done one of these ?

Yes, it can be done but it is tight. Pull RR wheel and work through the access hole.

But, pulling the transaxle isn't all that hard. With the seat pan off linkage on both side is fairly easy to disconnect, two hydraulic lines and drive shaft followed by four bolts to the frame.

With it out all the seals are easy to get to.

Got it done today. I had talked to an older service guy at the local dealer who has done them. Pulled the seat pan and gas tank off. Ended up removing the RH rear wheel too. You remove the control arm and then a snap ring and washer then dig the 2 orings out of a recess in the housing. It wasn't that bad. I spent more time adjusting the linkage ! Now my reverse goes a lot faster.
