Briggs and Stratton 26HP V-twin

I have a Briggs and Stratton 26HP, ELS-725 #446777 -02YYE1- Code 031222YG that makes a high pitch screaming sound when it runs, and that's at all speeds. I decided to tear into it thinking that something was rubbing on the plastic somewhere. I took the cover off and all looked good. I then took the air filter out exposing the crankcase breather tube. I pulled the sparkplug out and cranked it over and the noise was the vibration of the reeds in the crankcase breather! As I turned it over with the starter the louder it got. I had another breather on a tired short block so I swapped them out thinking that would fix it. No change! This engine doesn't smoke, runs great, maybe a little lean so I just put some seafoam in the fuel. This is the only one of these I've ever run across so have no knowledge of what to expect. Are these problematic? I looked on the B&S websight and this is supposed to be a "PROFESSIONAL SERIES" that will last 40% longer than a standard Briggs. Opinions anyone? (This is a Craftsman engine, by the way)
Thanks, Irv

You don't say what the hours are on that engine, but it was made in 2003. I am not familiar with that problem and I work on a lot of them. How many hours are on it?

Does it ooze oil anywhere? Does it use oil? Does it smoke any?

I am just wondering if the rings are about done and its putting more than the normal amount of air through the crankcase breather. Usually when that series Briggs engine gets pretty worn it starts to ooze oil, its being forced through the gaskets because the crankcase breather can't keep up with the blowby.

No it doesn't smoke or have any blowby that I can tell. I just put this engine on the mower so I don't know how many hours are on it. This is the first couple hours I've put on it because I was concerned about the noise. I never thought about old the old rings putting pressure on the system. I've seen that on single cylinder Kohlers pushing oil out of the valve covers. Would I be correct is saying I'll just go ahead and run it and see what happens? But that noise is very irritating especially to someone with tinnitus like me!!!

"high pitch screaming"
Changed out the engine.
Still have a "high pitch screaming".

Should tell you that it is not the engine.
Look for debris, rocks, sticks, bad idler etc on the pulleys.

Mule made me think. have you tried running it without the clutch on there and all the belts?

"high pitch screaming"
"changed out the engine"
"Same problem"
Nope, you read it wrong. I didn't say it did that on the old engine. When I got this mower the engine that was in it (24 hp B&S v- twin) had a valve guide get loose and bent a push rod. I had this untested
engine so I put it on rather than tear into the old one. They all bolt up the same and also the electrics. At first I thought something was rubbing on the plastic housing so I took it off and then the air
filter. I found the noise was coming from the reed in the crankcase breather. It did it when I was cranking it with starter and then when it starts, it turns into a high pitched scream. The clutch wasn't even
on it then, neither was the deck and I've replaced all 3 idlers on the drive train.
I was just asking if anyone had run across this before.
I mowed a lawn with it today and it's still squalling like a jet airplane.

Nope, you read it wrong.

No I read it correctly.
You changed the Breather Reed unit..

I will still say that it is not the engine. For if the Breather Reed was bad. You would have an air filter soaked in oil and the engine would smoke like 1962 model chainsaw.
