444 cooling fan

So my cooling fan is missing blades so I bought a used one to put on however my engine doesn't have a timing hole on it to stick a screwdriver in to stop the engine from turning. Any ideas on how to get the old one off thanks!

Remove spark plug and then turn engine towards the top of stroke. before it reaches the top take a clean piece of preferably nylon starter cord or some of similar size that is about 18-24" long and insert several inches into plug hole. (Leave enough sticking out to pull it out by)Then turn the engine to top of stroke and it should hold the crankshaft from turning. You will have remove and reinsert it when you need to turn your crankshaft the other way when you need to tighten fasteners. I have done it this way for many years working on lawn mowers tiller and chain saws when there was no way of holding it otherwise. One word of caution though, excessive force could bend a connecting rod if you are not careful!

I believe that bolt that holds the fan on MIGHT be left hand thread been a few years since I worked on one though .

Yes LH threads yes a impact make quick work of it I use this method most of the time but before I got a impact in the 60's and 70's I have loosened dozens of them with just a end wrench and I hit the wrench with my hand to break it loose,,
