i have a 42 inch cut 12 hp deer lawn tractor that sounds like a rod knocking what could be the cause of this before i tear it down any ideas would be appreciated

Also check to be sure the pulleys are clean. Sometimes debris gets caught in the vee of the pulley and makes the idler jump and sounds horrible.

Check motor mount bolts, if they are loose it will make a heck of a racket.

Small Engine Warehouse lists replacement engine kits.
Alternatively, you could buy a tractor with a similar engine and blown transaxle (someone tried to pull a big trailer or something) and swap the engine over.
