Greasing steering gears

I just purchased a new John Deere S240 without power steering and noted that the steering gears looked dry, not lubricated, on my initial inspection. Was this an over sight on inspection at the dealer or do they not recommend lubricating any longer.

Not familiar with that model but I never had nor saw grease on one and never saw it listed in the owner's manual as a service item. In the 42 years I owned this farm I never even saw one noticeably worn.

Not familiar with that model, but the Husqvarnas and the MTD/Troybilt that I work on never have grease on their 'exposed' steering gears.

'Exposed' meaning not enclosed in a gearbox or protective housing.

I am thinking the thought process is that the grease will attract dust which will act as a lapping compound and wear the gears even quicker than if they were just left dry without grease.
