John Deere 317 lawn tractor

Good day everyone. I gave my son in law a John Deere 317 lawn tractor last year for lawn care. The issue with the
tractor is the little tractor engine tractor starts and runs for a minute or more at a time, then it dies. I know the battery
is older. Does this little tractor have an electrical charging system? I worked on it last year to get it running again. I
don’t recall a generator or small alternator on the tractor. Is it possible that the battery is just at the end of its life that
the engine doesn’t stay running? The wiring seemed to look alright from what I recall. Any suggestions please would
be appreciated. Thank you. Kow Farmer Kurt

I just found out that the mower will run far awhile, not sure how much time, possibly half hour to an hour, then the engine will just quit running. Is it possible the safety switch in the seat is bad or a wire grounding out? This is a 1980 model lawn tractor. Thank you. Kow Farmer Kurt

Check for spark when it dies.

If no spark, check for voltage at the (+) primary coil terminal (pink wire).
