JD 420 ignition switch removal.

Brother has a 1988 JD 420 that intermitently will not engage the starter when turning the key. He has to
turn the key 5 or 6 times to get the starter to turn. Question is how to get to the switch and wiring as it
is at the bottom of the front panel. Is their an easy way to access this or do you have to take the "dash"
apart? Anyone have experience with this?

Does he have the starter rely improvement kit installed on tractor? Easy way is to remove the battery and battery tray to get access to the key switch.

What is the starter relay kit, how do you tell if it installed? He has had the tractor since new and no upgrades that I remember.

Look near the starter by the dipstick tube there should be a small black really. If it doesn’t have the starter improvement kit I recommend it. John Deere part number M77862

Part number has been changed to AM107421.

The kit is quite $$$ from DEERE, but if you have some 12 Volt electrical knowledge it can be done for under $20, worth a try, I'd say.

You need a "Bosch-style" "ice cube relay" and a little wire and a few wire connectors to do this.

A schematic is on Page 8 at the link below.

That kit shows for Kawasaki engines, my brother has an Onan engine. Does the starter relay pertain to the Onan engine also?

My Deere will do the same thing. I spray the switch down the entrance that you install the key with electrical contact cleaner. Will start then.
