Jeffcat or somebody. Question. I have a craftsman 54” 26hp rider. I noticed when I was going up hill Pulling a little trailer that the tractor seemed like the clutch was slipping a bit. I know it doesn’t have a clutch. Does it mean the hydrostatic transaxle needs a n oil top up. No sign of leaks though. Thanks for your thoughts.

ASSUMING the hydro is belt-driven the first thing to suspect would be a slipping belt.

If the belt and/or the sheaves are worn the belt will "bottom" in the sheave (typically the one on the hydro) and slip easily.

Look to see if the belt groove is polished and shiny all the way to the bottom.

Actually, the first thing to check is does the clutch pedal come back to the fully engaged position. Those mowers have a tendancy to pile grass/chaff up on top of the plate the steering sector mounts under. Then the stop for the clutch pedal shaft stops on top of the trash instead of going all the way down to the plate. Then the belt starts slipping.

Another thing to check is whether the front transmission mount is still securely fastened to the transmission. if the transmision starts twisting in the frame it will twist forward and allow the belt to slip. If you do find the front mount loose from the transmission, usually there will be some damage at the axle mounts as well. There is a repair kit for the axle mounts.

Hi fellows, thanks for your thoughts. I will certainly explore your suggestions. Stay safe.stay away from crowds. Ed Will Oliver BC
