BS 5HP Timing

I've got a B&S 5HP engine, L-head model 133432 0036-01 that I had apart to replace the connecting rod. When I put it back together I'm not sure if I got the crankshaft/camshaft gear timing correct as it won't fire now. I thought it was a matter of lining up the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gears and it would work. However, during assembly the bearing on the crank was in the way of seeing the crank gear mark. Once the bearing was off, the mark on the crankshaft gear was actually on the back side, facing towards the counterweights/connecting rod. So I flipped the gear around so that the mark was on the same side as the cam shaft gear and assembled. I'm wondering now if I was wrong in doing that? Why would the crank gear have been "facing" the wrong way? I have no history on the engine and if it's been worked on in the past. It's on an Ariens garden tiller right now.

I was going to open the engine up again to see if the key way in the gear was such that flipping the gear to get the timing mark on what I assumed was the right side would change the timing. Any thoughts? Not sure if I explained it well.

If it has a plastic gear anywhere, all bets are off. (I worked 1/2 a day on a 3.5 hp. only to finally find the valve timing was 1/2 a revolution off.)

When setting the timing, keep in mind that at TDC between the compression and power strokes, Both valves should be closed. Both cam lobes should be oriented opposite the top of the cylinder. When I say'opposite' I mean one lobe 45 degrees to one side, the other 45 degrees to the other side of a line parallel with the center of the cylinder.
