Troy Bilt GTX 14063 Snowblower Auger Shaft Grease?
Repaired the gearbox on the unit. Putting it back together.. The seals on the gearbox appear to seal to
the auger rail/hollow that goes over the drive shaft with the shear pins. There was a REALLY heavy
grease between the shaft and the auger rail.. That grease appears to hold the gear oil in the gear box
from running down the shaft. Anybody know what current grease to use for that 20 year old application?

I had a Cub Cadet blower attachment on a 2518 tractor and the MTD suggested gear lube wasn't available. For many things I have switched over to Mobil-1 grease and I have great results. I have never had a lubrication related failure on anything I use that grease on either winter or summer.

Your blower is made by MTD and you can get manuals for it on line if you have the model and serial numbers.

Gear oil is in the gear box..Have that . Coming out of the gear box is a shaft to the left and right that the auger shafts (hollow ) slide over. The gearbox seals seal the outside of the auger shafts.. Gearbox grease can run down the inside of the auger shafts. When I pulled it apart to repair, the gearbox shafts were loaded with this unbelievably heavy brown grease that must have had two purposes. Keep the auger free from the gear box shaft to let the shearpins work AND keep the gear oil in the gear box from running down the shaft.. Had to wipe the brown gook off the gearbox shaft to work on the gear box....WASN?t EASY getting it off.. Now on assembly I need to figure out what that brown stiff lubricant was as it holds the gear oil from getting out..

Do you have the parts manual for that unit? MTD is pretty good about making them available. I don't recall ever seeing heavy grease in there to act as a gasket for lighter weight gear oil.

Makes me think that someone took a shortcut and did that instead of replacing worn bushings and/or seals along with gear oil that is thinner than it should be.
