1942 Briggs Stratton model i lawn mower restoration

I have been working on restoring a 1942 Briggs and Stratton model i lawn mower and have been running into some problems.
I have the engine rebuilt except for the cooling shroud is still off of the motor. I was unable to obtain an original style magneto (coil)that works off the old points system. I did some reading online and supposedly a new non points style coil would bolt right on and work. This didn't work, so I did more research, and it said to unbolt the magneto and install it in the opposite direction. I am still not getting spark out of the motor and am not sure what todo. and I didn't fix any components in the points system due to I couldn't find all the parts. I can obtain obsolete part numbers from briggs and after market ones from Napa, that don't cross over.

Secondly, if I can get spark out of the ignition system, I am in need of finding a gas tank that looks period correct. I have spent a lot of time trying to find something that will work, but haven't come across a good solution.

You might show a picture of some of the old parts that are needed. Someone might have one by seeing it. Was your original magneto a three legged one? It cannot be replaced by a two legged one because of the way the flywheel magnets are positioned.

What is the model number of the engine, seems it would have been reasonable to post that?

it is a model I

The first photo is the original coil which is Briggs and Stratton original part number 29671. The second photo is the new coil that is prime line 7-01652, I was told I could cut the wire coming from the points system off and just bolt this coil on, but still don't get spark. The third and fourth photos are of the original fuel tank possible part number 29034

You have the correct part number for the coil, Briggs 29671, been "nla" from Briggs for a long time.

As you have $$$ found out, a "2-legged" coil won't work.

The actual COIL can be removed from the laminations and replaced.

Some have used a readily-available Techumseh coil, but the requires some trimming of the coils center "leg", as the square hole in that coil is smaller, but it apparently DOES work and produce a good spark when finished.

If you GOOGLE "Briggs 29671", there's some options out there, here's two interesting links of the many that came up for me:
