Case 400 Series

A friend of my dad's has three Case 400 Series garden tractors for sale. I know Case made a 444, what else did they make in that series? Tires are good sheet metal is removed, but there. Engines are still in place. Two of them are setting outside in the weather. He also has mower decks and several different implements for them including a rotary plow. I hate working on garden tractors, but I wouldn't mind fixing up one of them. Is $300 each too much to offer him? Not sure what a running tractor would be worth?

The Case 400 series tractors are 444=14 hp Kohler K321 446 = 16 hp Onan and the 448 = 18 hp Onan they are well built tractor Case liked hydraulics they are hydraulic drive not hydrostatic the tillers were hydraulic driven they had various sized decks belt driven left hand discharge do a nice job mowing they have a manual PTO clutch, a 2 speed transaxle 3 pt hitches and a sleeve hitch is available IMHO $300.00 would be a good deal

Yes there are lots of aftermarket parts for the Kohler K321 very reasonable and parts are available for the Onan not very reasonable, parts are available for the Case / Ingersoll tractors (Case sold the line to Ingersoll in 1984/85) and were in production until a year or so ago

I had a 446 and know they made a 448 also. While the hydraulic drive was pretty much bullet proof, steering and front axle parts do wear out. Don't know about the 444, but the 446 and 8 should have a 48" deck. I would be careful checking them over if they don't run. I sold my excellent running 446 25 years ago with a mower, single stage snow blower and front plow for $1,400 dollars. I would start lower, you can always come up. They aren't that heavy for scrap value and parting out a non running one would be sketchy at best. BTW: my 446 was an Onan.

I have a 446 16hp Onan that I bought used years ago , and
It sure takes a beating , mostly used in winter with 54 ? snow plow
And have been cutting 1/2 acre grass a few years ,
Things to look out for on the Onan powered ones is ,
Engines that have been over heated , result loose valve seats ,
sticking valves , bad fuel pumps on the carb , and not many
options to repower , pretty much onan or B & S
Also the Case models will freewheel down hills , most of the Ingersoll
have holding valves . For plowing snow with that big blade ,
it works well , I have an old simplicity 7016 hydro
which I like very much , as I use that for garden work and grass cutting , it doesn?t coast fiend hills either . My choice would be a
7117 simplicity with hydro drive and lift

Cummins dealers have the Onan parts ,
You will not be happy with price ,

everything , Case and Ingersoll and Colt

Colt Industries designed the Colt-A-Matic Hydraulic Drive system and began selling tractors in 1963. Case wanted to join the Garden Tractor bandwagon with other farm tractor companies. They recognized the benefits of the Colt design and bought them out. Both brands were sold 1965-66, built side-by-side on the same assembly line. In 67 Colt brand disappeared. 1969 brought a redesign in the Case 200/400 series tractors (dubbed Low Profile/High Clearance and easily recognized by small/large rear tire), with many improvements in strength. The last digit indicates engine hp; 10-14hp were single cylinder Kohler K, 16-18 were twin cylinder Onan P218. The 400 series included 442/444/446/448 models;the 442 ended in 1972, and the 448 began in 1980. A heavier 600 series front end loader (optional backhoe) was released in 1972. Case sold their garden tractor division to Ingersoll in 1983. Badging transitioned from Case to Ingersoll 1984-85. Ingersoll replaced the 200/400 series in 1989 with their 3000/4000 series. Production ended in Jan 2016, but I just saw evidence that the company may have been bought earlier this year.

Thanks for the history. My brother-in-law is a lawn mower repair guy. I'm going to try and talk him into trading the guy out of these tractors. I don't want more than one.
