What size battery?

Too cold to go out to the shed and figure out what size battery I now need in the JDX534 mower/tractor.

I had it on a charger and it barely started. I have known this battery was getting pretty weak, but put it off, and now need to shop for a new battery.

I appreciate any info that will help me pick out the right size. Leo
 
According to JD Parts TY25876 is the Deere part number you should need for an X534. It should be a group 51 battery with 500CCA. Those specs came from JD Parts.

You better go look at it, they are all the same size but there are left and right hand post configurations. If you get the wrong one the cables might not reach. About $35 for a good one at Menards.
 
The difference in the price of those small batteries is maybe 30 bucks top to
bottom. At tractor supply I buy the highest CCA model. If you have an
Interstate battery warehouse near you go take a look at their second hand
return battery department. I got two beauty high CCA batteries for twenty five
bucks each last year. They were NOS batteries. A real score! They both work
perfectly. You can find some real good deals there. Look on the internet and
see where your local warehouse is. This is the perfect time of year to find
one.

To "Russ" and "Jeff", the first reply brought up the fact this is an automotive style "group 51 battery" with conventional top posts and NOT a little garden tractor battery that uses the flat tabs and a bolt to attach the eyelet ends of the battery cables. Unless the battery cables have been changed, a cheap garden tractor battery won't directly swap in.

The suggested replacement TY25876 battery will set you back about $140 at the stealership, a Group 51 automotive battery can by had for a bit less at places like Wallaby World, if $$$ is an issue.

My take on battery ratings on machines of such, which includes tractors and their high CCA rating numbers, is that the CCA rating is high, not because of
needed amperage to roll the engine, but because as you mentioned, the unit sits for long periods unattended, battery energy draining on a daily basis, and
one expects to go out, roll the starter and get ignition, now a starter slowly whirring, wroar, wroar, wroar.

I forget the prefix letter (maybe the letter D) on the smaller lawn tractor batteries, but I know of 3 numbers D1, D2, and D3 and the CCA increases as the
numbers increase still maintaining the case size and terminal shape. The price runs from $25 for the D1 to $40 for the D3.
 
The largest physical size and CCA Yuasa AGM battery that will fit in the battery box.

Theirs a reason why they are OEM in most of the ATV/UTVs sold today.
 
What is it about AGM batteries that warrants the cost?

They last twice as long and provide more cranking power no acid to spill or vent

They are designed for harsh conditions and hold a charge during storage far longer than a wet acid battery. The CCA always seem to be more than advertised especially with Yuasa batteries.

Cost? Your choice. $100 for a battery that can last 10 years. Or buying a $50+ for a Walmart battery every two years.
