Hi every one I'm new to the Gravely world and I Have a Commercial 430 after a lot of time and patience I got it running. :D The problem I have is shifting into high or low gear.If the unit is off the shiftier will not move up or down. I have read the service manual but it does not explain how it all works. I was hoping some one here could point me in the right direction. This is an Onan Engine Model #NB-MS/1847A

I do not know that unit as such but many times it has to do with the fact the gears are not spinning so with out that the gear will ot line up so one can shift it up or down due to the gears not lining up

The lever is the 2, 1 that controls the ground and attachment speed. I took to deck off and with I put it back on the pto would not engage I did manage to get that it to work now but the gear lever does not work.

Make sure the clutch linkage is free and
not binding on the side of the
transmission, there should be .10 gap
between the coils of the springs

ll I think I fixed my problem with the 430 not shifting into the 1 or 2 gear. when I lifted it up to work on the linkage the mower deck slipped off the PTO and now the sifter and the PTO lever work. it looks like I did not have them lined up right. So tomorrow I just need to line it all up and good for a test drive. Thanks for all the help. by the way any suggestions on how to get it all line up right?

I'm a geezer who has been playing around with a variety of Gravely two wheel and four wheel tractors for about 15 years. I've never had a four wheel tractor as old as the 400 series, but assume that the PTO shaft "fit" is about the same for everything. For me, connecting the PTO shafts has always been a bit of a challenge. Patience and a few choice swear words seem to help.

If the PTO shaft is completely removed from both the tractor and mower, use a wire brush to clean any rust off the splines of the drive shaft on the tractor and input shaft on the mower. Look closely for any burrs on the shafts. If any are found, use a file to remove them. Apply some grease to the splines on the shafts.

For me, it is easier when I can separate the PTO shaft into its two halves, then attach the halves to both the tractor and mower. It's easier to align the rectangular male part of the shaft into the female part than it is to align all the teeth on the splined shaft.
