Jacobsen 1450 super Cheif

I just finished rebuilding my Kohler engine and put it back in tractor. The tractor start and runs great and headlights work as well. However it does not seem to be charging the battery. It has the original voltage regulator and I?m wondering if I have the wires mixed up. It has 3 t connectors on it. Does anyone know which one goes to what? I have 2 black wires and one yellow.

Two outside connectors are AC from the alternator under the flywheel.
Middle is DC to the plus side of the battery.

Troubleshooting - the two AC wires should read 28 volts AC at wide open throttle.
If not, you have a broken wire/wires, missing magnets in flywheel, or dead stator.
IF you have the AC on the two outside wires but nothing on that middle wire vs ground, the rectifier/voltage regulator is either dead or not grounded.

That last tidbit in Steve's reply is often overlooked. the regulator/rectifier case must have a good ground. A wire from it to the battery ground isn't a bad idea. Paint, rust, grease/oil etc often get in the way of chassis grounds.

Could you clear up one point. Is it 28 volts AC between the two outside wires or from each one to ground? Thanks.

Measure AC voltage between the two wires from that stator that connect to the "outside" terminals on the regulator.

Most likely you have one with plugs like the picture. If you have the 28 ACvolts on the two white wires then that is good. Now stick the proble in the back of the red plug and you should get around 14 volts DC. Yes you need the case so it has a good ground. I have gone through two of those regulators in the past fifteen years on two different machines. Buy one on Ebay because the locals will nail you three or four times that price. Not that hard to diagnose.

Opps. I have all four common engines on my stuff and the majority are Briggs. My little 160 deere had the regulator connections fry a few years ago. Now...most every regulator on these machines tests the same way. Outer wires are 28 volts AC and the center is the 14 volt output. It is a two to one ratio. Just go on Ebay for a new one.
