Case 644 rebuild or repower

Ok... So I?m thinking about re powering or rebuilding my 644 bucket loader. It currently has a Kohler 14 hp that is the same vintage as the tractor. The only attachments are a mower deck and the bucket loader.
Are there any conversion kits that maybe available for the Case 644.
Would my 644 with only a bucket loader be any different to me with say 16hp, 18hp, 20hp or 22hp?
Im trying to decide whether to rebuild the stock or go to newer style engine. Also whether to go with gas or diesel, however all of my other equipment is gas.

Hi you could contact these folks Small engine Warehouse Case built many small tractors using 14 Kohlers, 16 & 18 hp Onans and later on Ingersoll used B&S twin V's in basically the same tractor as your 644 I think the 600 series are just heavier built for loader backhoe etc

I forgot to mention that the Case tractors all use a short crank PTO shaft so just any Kohler K321 or onan would require the short crank or would have to be cut off

Higher HP won't really do anything for the hydraulics, unless you change the pump also. The hydraulic pump and motor combo on the little Case can only tranmit about 12hp to the wheels. If you're happy with the mower performance a rebuild of the Kohler is by far the cheapest, easiest and fastest.

The only thing the higher hp will get you is more power on the PTO for the mower.

You can rebuild a "K" series Kohler with new piston,rod,and valves for $125.00 Add $50.00
to $75.00 if it has to be rebored (I like "K"s)

When was the last time you bought Kohler engine parts? I rebuilt a K241, 10 hp. Used Stens parts, still put over $250 in just parts, gaskets, piston, rings, conn rod, & exh valve. Kohler parts would have been over $500. This was about 6 years ago. Or Six parts price increases ago.
There may be some no-name imported parts out there that are cheaper but you can make your own mind up about how much cheaper parts you can afford to use. A broken conn rod ruins the engine block about 50% of the time, then you can scrap the whole engine.

The days when every IH dealer had a complete Cub Cadet spec Kohler engine sitting on the parts counter all summer stopped about 35 years ago.
