deere 445 power steering cylinder leaking

I have a 445 and the power steering
cylinder is leaking around the rod. The
cylinder is about $300 from deere, and I
hate to pay that when all it really needs
is seals replaced. I think the cylinder
is welded and not able to be taken apart.
Is there any other options besides
replacing the cylinder?
 
A welded cylinder can be cut open, repaired, and welded back. Usually the back end is cut off so heat won't be applied near the seals. Commonly cut in a lathe, but if you're good with a cut off wheel on a 4" grinder it can be cut that way.

Look the rod over for wear, if it's worn or damaged it won't hold a seal long.

Also look closely for a snap ring holding the seal in. Some can be serviced without opening the cylinder.
 
As Steve said, it can be cut open, repaired and rewelded. I've had a couple of 455s done. But, the guy that did mine is no longer doing those.

The tricky part for me would be getting a leak free weld. But next time, I'll try it myself as there is a good hydraulics shop nearby that can and will match up seals if I bring the old ones in.

I bought a seal kit for my little model 40 loader on my 455 from JD. All four cylinders ran about 300 bucks. Later I needed a seal kit for one cylinder so I took the seals to that shop. $12!!!
 
I did the lift cyl. on my JD F725. It was a welded cyl. I have a lathe so I cut it apart in the lathe. Cut the butt end open. Took it apart and went to the local hyd. shop and they matched up all the seals and they had them in stock. I took it to a friend who is an excellent welder so I had a leak free weld done. I do not think I could of done a leak free weld ! lol.
Worst part of the whole ordeal was the hyd. shop tacked on a fee for matching up the seals ! They had not done this in the past and I did not see it until I was out in the parking lot leaving. At least they had it in stock.
