I am looking at a used mower that has a twin cylinder 26 HP??? engine. Engine runs good but when I pulled the air filter I noticed it had engine oil on the inside. The air filter looked like it was new, what would cause this?

Not unusual for oil to appear inside filter housing. It is from the hose that run's from housing to crankcase. It's the equivalent of pvc (positive crankcase ventilation) on automobile engines. It only become's a problem if oil begins soaking filter. If filter looks to have been used for a while and doesn't have much oil on it,it's not a problem.

I'm going 'against the grain' on this:

How many hours is on it? Most mowers with that large an engine have an hour meter. I say this because I rarely see a Briggs twin (Not a Vanguard) that goes much beyond 600 hours without beginning to slobber oil somewhere. Either outside or inside.

Oil in the intake below the air filter can be a sign of bad rings, or a sign that one of the head gaskets is blown. Basically that engine could be getting too much combustion pressure in the crankcase and that is why oil is going through the crankcase breather.

Is there any dust in there? For several years Briggs had problems keeping their air filters sealed tight enough that dust could not bypass it. Then, just after they fixed the problem with an round air filter that really fit and sealed up, they re-designed the newer style filter to be cheaper and now they are right back where they started.

I agree with bees also. They changed a really dirty air filter because the engine was sucking really hard and "oiled" the filter. If they havent been abused they are a very strong engine.

if it was used with real dirty filter prior to looked like new filter this is no issue.some people when they try sell something they will change filters only then if I were to bet I bet the prior one was probably pried out. this can cause that. been good engines otherwise from what this shop has seen. whats plugs look like, did it smoke

Hi, I have had a few 26 hp Briggs motors.no problems except one started running on one cylinder. I bought a new carb on Ebay, cheap. Now it runs perfect. Ed Will. Oliver BC
