Briggs 17.5 motor problems

I?m working on a John Deere 214 for a guy that?s had a 17.5 Briggs put on it. He was mowing with it and said it started sounding different and losing power then quit. I started checking it over and cleaned the mag on the flywheel and the coil as they were rusty and it started but was backfiring though the carb. It looked like the head gasket was leaking a little I think this is the culprit but wanted some more ideas thank you

Check the valves for the proper clearance.

While in there. Look very closely at the valve guides. They are known to move and not allow the valves to close. Common problem with B&S overhead valve engines.

What should they be set at?

Valve Clearance Intake .004 - .006 in. (.10 - .15 mm)

Valve Clearance Exhaust .009 - .011 in. (.23 - .28 mm)
