john deere 345

I have a john deere 345 that the pto will not engage. While mowing one night it started cutting out and if I would shut the switch off and turn back on it would work. and I got done cutting the grass. I worked with the switch and it seemed to work. I started cutting grass another evening and everything was working ok. Until the mower deck just quit working and when I would flip the pto switch nothing happened, I bought a new switch and replaced the old one but still PTO does not engage. Can anyone make any suggestions what else I might test or take a look at. Any help would be appreciated

There is a spade type fuse that will corrode and loosen up,the seat safety switch and the foot brake all have connectors that will stop the blades. That is if it is an electrical problem. Could be a bad clutch.

I would run a temporary wire from the battery directly to the clutch to verify if the problem is the clutch, safety switch, or the wiring harness. Don't buy any more parts until you have done some thorough troubleshooting to verify which part is bad. Is the battery good, does it start the tractor well?

If the mower has head lights and you were using them, shut off the lights and see if it works okay then. If it works, could be bad battery, connections, etc...... or alternator/generator output.

the battery is good and starts the mower will it was just bought before summer mowing. I wlll run the jumper wire. What is the trick to unplugging the connection at close to the clutch.

There is probably a little clip that latches it together, either pry it up with a little screwdriver or squeeze it together. What I might try first is check the voltage when it fails, maybe put a charger on it when it fails.
