I just acquired a John Deere 317 lawn tractor tonight from my brother. It is in need of some tlc. Anyway, the starter needs to be replaced. It is an Onan engine in tractor. Does anyone have advice on how to remove and reinstall a starter on this lawn tractor please? I don?t have the serial number of the tractor with me now, but I can get it if needed. Thank you. Yep, the starter is cleverly concealed beneath the engine.

Engine has to be removed (or at least "raised") to R+R the starter.

BTW, the 317's left the factory with a KT17 Kohler engine and they turned out not to be the best thing ever, and DEERE had a program (with mods) to replace them with an Onan engine.

If your engine is REALLY an Onan it's been swapped in and the tractor serial number won't show that, but there's a special section in the parts catalog that details the conversion and the parts list for the Onan and related parts.

Changing the starter is simple. Just remove the nose shield and two bolts. After you remove the engine from the tractor.

Onan tech since 1980.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I have never worked on a JD 317 ever before. Hopefully this goes well?? LOL
