John Deere. 317 transmission testing evaluation

I bought an old John Deere 318 garden tractor with hydrostatic transmission. Was told that transmission worked but doubt now that the individual selling could know.
I plan to use the transmission for a different application but before I install it I was wondering if there is any way to test it. It is currently out of the garden tractor and on my shop floor.
is It possible to test at home or best to find a shop?

INTERESTING post, 317 or 318?

ENNYWHO, those hydros are similar but not interchangeable.

Would have been a good idea to test it "in situ" before removing it, on the other hand, those hydros are darned near bulletproof, and if no filings in the bottom, the odds are in your favor that it's OK. (IMHO).
