Walk behind sickle mowers

I am interested in finding one these-be it a Gravely or some other brand. I want the bar to be no wider than 30". But my main question is, whether or not it would mow off a small sapling no larger than my little finger. I want to find an older, used one; so is there one brand that is better, stouter than the others? Thanks, Mark.

If all you want is the sickle bar mower its hard to beat a Jari. A good one can be had for $200 or so around here.

I agree....they are a bit 'crude" but they are light and EXTREMELY
durable. If you are careful, they will easily cut 1/2" to 3/4" saplings.
They still make them but new ones are very, very expensive.
I use mine a lot every summer.....wouldn't be without it!
Used ones are pretty reasonable but they don't come up all that often.
Check e-bay; a few years ago I found a good one there for $65.

I have an Eclipse, walk be-hind sickle bar mower. It's handier than a pocket on a shirt. I mean as long as you don't try to use it on a steep bank. Then it is very hard to control. It's not for sale as I use it sometimes. Just putting in my 2 cents.

I use two Gravely walk behind "L" tractors with sickle bars, I don't think they ever made as narrow as 30 inches, but it could be cut down to that. They will cut most anything growing that fits between the guards, I run mine slow enough so if it is too tough it will stall the engine before anything breaks.

I've used a Gravely L to do that. If possible you want the the gear reduction wheels and tires. And be prepared to tighten everything up a couple times a day when you're working it I've also run a Jari and much prefer the Gravely.

Troy Built or DR made a sickle bar mower some years back. I see them for sale every now and then, usually missing parts.
